Announcing all the goodies available at the official Culture Japan Con shop. GAOOO!

9474328356_06e437f573_o

First up are the Moekana T-shirts. We chose designs based on your feedback - and here are the most voted for!

This is the classic Tora T-shirt which is part of the Culture Japan Apparel line - its been around since the beginning and is always the first design to sell out.

9474328930_ccabb6ca80_o

The next design is Mirai in her "Solar Marine" uniform.

9474329296_668edce031_o

I love retro pixel games and glad you liked this design! We call it "Millennium Retro."

9471543853_045026e120_o

This is the first Moekana T-shirt I made as a sample many moons ago and it finally gets the mass production treatment. This design is simply called "Kimono."

We have been improving the quality of the print over the past year and this is the best so far using a printing technology called Direct Print - we get full color gradients unlike previous Silk Screening versions. It's also durable in the wash too and doesn't crack like some of the initial batch did ToT

9471544505_745883bb03_o

T-shirts are all RM90 and come with 4 free cards - Moekana Onna (female), Otoko (male) and Chitose Shirasawa and Kizuna Yumeno cards - these complement the character cards that are included in the Moekanji pack.

9474331954_6e4cc608b6_o

9471546443_a5a40e9d09_o

The size chart - just FYI - I always wear the S size cos I like em tight ^^;
Many T-shirts out there show the tips of Man Boobs which I'm not keen on so I chose a thicker material. Unless you are super excited, you need not worry about your tips showing when wearing Moekana T-shirts.

HTC ONE Review

9479440208_8674378e59_o

Its been a year since I switched to Android after being an iPhone user since the 3GS days. The Samsung Galaxy S3 was what I had been using for the past year and it served me well up until a certain point.

My main mobile is now the HTC ONE which came out a while ago - today I'm going to give it the quick going over and talk about what happened to the S3 and why I didn't go for the S4 instead. I'll also talk about why the HTC ONE has a crap OS unless you change it to CM10.1 ^o^

The end of this post has sample photos taken on the HTC ONE.

9476651725_e5e1144bd6_o

At the time, the HTC ONE was not available in Japan and there was like no stock *anywhere*
I found an online store called Clove in the UK and after placing an order it arrived about 3 weeks later as they had to wait for stock to come in.

The SIM Free HTC ONE cost me 420 pounds - lucky I don't live in the UK anymore or 84 pounds tax would have been added onto my bill ><

9479441014_4f8215dc1f_o

While there seems to be a trend for these sleeves to be kept on even during use - I just had to remove mine ^^;

9476652313_bb5c2bacef_o

Inside the box - USB charger with UK 3 plug adapter thingy. Headphones, instructions and SIM pin.

9476652631_76c65c1e6f_o

When I got my hands on the HTC ONE however, it reminded me of why I jumped ship on the iPhone - the customization level is extremely low and feels like they tried to target the mass iPhone crowd by making it as easy as possible to get up n running.

For me however, I switched to Android because I wanted those customization features and the HTC ONE was a disappointment right out of the box with its Sense 5 OS - ironic naming as it doesn't make any sense at all.

The home screen for example comes with something called BlinkFeed - you can connect your twitter (and Facebook I think) to it but all the RSS feeds are from preset blogs in the system - you can't add your favorite site and are forced to read from sites that are already programmed into it.
Some of Sense 5 "in action" below.

This post contains a video, click here to view.

9479442076_75a0f1a324_o

The best thing about the HTC ONE are the weather icons which are animated and look really nice.

9479442386_670bf72046_o

Settings screen.

9479442700_3e63a31c0c_o

Most android devices have toggles for various settings like Bluetooth, brightness, WiFi etc but the HTC ONE had none! I had to download an app just to do this ><
This again reminded me of the iPhone which didn't have toggles - of course they just announced toggles for iOS7 recently which they call Control Center though.

9476653955_592f629c64_o

You can't set the icon bar at the bottom to transparency either.

9476654255_9de75001fa_o

Did I mention that I liked the weather icon? ^^

9479443772_36a58ab867_o

The screen is really nice when compared to the S3. I thought the S3 had a great screen until I put it side by side with the HTC ONE. The S3 screen seemed kinda yellow.

9476655035_62131d5087_o

For apps like MiraiClock3, a nasty bar shows at the bottom of the app which you can't get rid of that contains only one menu button ToT.

9476655307_a224c61d98_o

While the OS is crap, the build of the HTC ONE is oozing quality all over.

9476655629_84c686d27c_o

Lovely matt silver back. Has some Beats Audio thing built in.

9476655901_0c599979a5_o

The cutting on the edges all around the device looks great.

9476656171_7fcd43a0f8_o

The camera quality however is not as good as the S3 I feel - grainy and at times its got this strange glow around the edges of photos. I always make sure there are no fingerprints on the camera before taking a snap though.

9479445494_7497c3d74b_o

There is only one physical button on the HTC ONE and its at the top. Ah I tell a lie - the volume buttons on the side too.

9479445808_a25a186831_o

The stereo speakers on the HTC ONE are just amazing - pretty much the same quality as a pair of separate mobile speakers.

9479446244_826e96a272_o

No biggie but the micro USB cable is off center.

9476657447_79e9e86a4e_o

9479446838_e4ee644748_o

9476658065_337757f5e6_o

The supplied headphones feel a bit cheap n tacky though.

9479447474_0a21abae9e_o

As I wasn't happy with the default Sense OS, I went about to replace it by installing Cyanogenmod just like I did with my S3.
Cyanogenmod (also known as CM10) is a customizable operating system for android devices - you basically replace the current OS.

The steps I took are copy pasted below from XDA Developers.

First time installing CyanogenMod 10.1 to your HTC One (GSM), or coming from another ROM:
- Unlock your device via http://www.htcdev.com
- Flash the latest official ClockworkMod-Recovery via Fastboot
- Copy GApps and CM10.1 ZIPs to your SDCard
- Boot into Recovery
- Flash CM10.1 zip from SDCard
- Flash GApps zip from SDCard
- DO A DATA WIPE / FACTORY RESET
- Reboot
- Don't restore system data using Titanium Backup!
- Restoring Apps + Data might cause problems and is not recommended, avoid it if possible!

Upgrading from earlier version of CyanogenMod 10.1:
- Copy CM10.1 ZIP to your SDCard
- Boot into Recovery
- Flash CM10.1 zip from SDCard
- Reboot

Upgrading from CyanogenMod 10:
- Read known issues ans FAQs
- Copy GApps and CM10.1 ZIPs to your SDCard
- Boot into Recovery
- Flash CM10.1 zip from SDCard
- Flash GApps zip from SDCard
- Reboot
- Wipe data of clock app
- Reset everything under Settings -> Date & Time otherwise editing alarms might cause FCs

Once Sense 5 has been completely replaced by CM10, you get a new loading screen. Some of CM10 in action on the HTC ONE below.

This post contains a video, click here to view.

9476659049_90989951b6_o

I LOVE CM10! Its just such an awesome OS! I've tried many flavors of Android including Paranoid Android and wot not but found that CM10 has a nice balance of everything that I need to be productive on my phone.

9476659395_70cfcf20d3_o

iPhone 4, HTC ONE and Galaxy S3 screen comparison. iPhone screen feels so small ><

9476659701_50d914a97e_o

This is my apps screen - as you can see its got a load of icons because I've changed the density of the screen using an app called Density Changer. If you are going to use it please do so at your own risk though!

Apps which I should mention that increase my productivity are Unlock with Wifi - I didnt see why I had to key in my pin when at home - good thing there was just the app for that which removed the need to mess with the unlock screen when its connected to your WiFi.

Its not stupid either meaning that somebody could not just steal your phone and bring it to outside of your house to unlock it - you need to unlock it at least once and then you need not unlock as long as you are within range of your home WiFi.

I must also mention IME Switcher - I need to type Japanese a lot so I use Google Japanese IME but the English spelling on that is terrible. Switching keyboards on Android can be cumbersome so this app enables you to switch keyboards from the notification tray.

My file explorer of choice is Solid Explorer and I use Airdroid to control various aspects of my Android.

9479448948_7207be5d5f_o

And here is my 2nd page of apps. Now to compare it to the original HTC apps screen...

9476660281_2dc9a61886_o

...the HTC ONE only has a 4 x 4 grid compared to my 8 x 6 grid.

9479449538_c47e777014_o

I used the Urban Armor Gear case for the S3 which I loved so I got the same brand of case for the HTC ONE from Amazon for 26USD.

I drop my phone a lot and know that I would have ended up with a smashed screen by now which means downtime - can't afford any downtime - not right now!

9479449842_fface0f791_o

The Urban Armor Gear case has got rubber all round and a sturdy back to protect the phone.

9479450104_241e675178_o

My S3 was serving me well until it started to freeze which would be remedied by a reboot. Then the freezing got worse to a state that the phone was completely unusable.
I hadn't the foggiest as to what was wrong - searches for "Galaxy S3 Freeze" came up with results which were standard for any mobile phone.

Linus (who also switched from iPhone to Android) also had the same problem with his S3 but his google foo was better than mine and he discovered that this problem affected a lot of the S3 units regardless of whether it was stock OS or CM10.

Apparently there was some bad disk sector and the way to fix the problem was to install a Dummy File Generator which filled up the disk space on the S3. This would then force the phone to freeze where it should be left for 20 mins to slowly "fix" itself.

After repeating this process, the freezes became less and less until there was no freezing at all.

By the time I found out about this however, I had already ordered the HTC ONE and was using my old iPhone for a while - its was painful going back to iOS after using Android for over a year - having to dig into settings just to toggle some features seemed not so clever where Android provides a toggle in the notification panel.
In this post I talk about all the other reasons which make Android so much more customizable for my workflow.

I could have gone for the S4 instead of the HTC ONE but after my experience with the S3, I don't think I can trust that line of phone anymore as it left me in the lurch at a time when I needed to be productive.

If I was to complain about the HTC ONE then it would be the shabby camera but apart from that the HTC ONE has been serving me well so far.

While there seems to be a trend for these sleeves to be kept on even during use - I just had to remove mine ^^;

The case does add thickness and cover up the lovely silver casing though ^^

9476661423_65e3ebb521_o

The external USB adapter from my S3 works with the HTC ONE enabling me to do a backup of the whole system on external media - this HTC ONE doesn't come with a MicroSD card slot.

20 years ago I would never have thought that I'd be doing my own Japanese pop culture event on the island of Penang.
Before I was put in a foster home, my parents brought me to Penang where I spent quite a bit of time - although they say that it was only for a few weeks on end, at that young age it felt like ages.

Very nostalgic being back here and can't wait to mingle with the locals at Culture Japan Con - hope you can make it!

Have you been longing to own one of those powered suits that you see in the movies? Well it looks like you need not long for any more thanks to Sagawa Electronics who just happen to have a Powered Jacket for retail at a laughable 12,000,000 yen.

9487236696_2a74d87d7c_o

The powered jacket is an extension of your body - you move your arms and it will move its arms with a Master/Slave setup.
At the moment it does not amplify your strength but will do so in future versions.
Check out the video below to see it in action.

I've been working with voice actress Asakawa Yuu for a while now - many of you will know her as the voice of Megurine Luka (Vocaloid), Rider (Fate/stay night), Motoko Aoyama (Love Hina) and many more.

Recently she's been busy attending a series of conventions around the world like Anime Central in Chicago, Anime Expo in Los Angeles, New York Comic Con, Fan Expo in Canada, Kawaii Kon in Hawaii, Anime Weekend Atlanta and more.

To add to the long list of cons she has attended around za warudo, Asakawa Yuu will also be joining us for our first convention - Culture Japan Con which takes place next week August 17 - 18 in Penang Malaysia. She will be mingling as much as possible and sharing with us her experience of her voice acting career.

If you don't have tickets yet then just turn up at 8:30 to get your walk-in tickets.

Announcing that I'm going to follow in my fathers footsteps and venture into making luxury brand shoes - but not just any shoes! The nitty gritty details further down the page.

In addition to this new venture, I shall remain as CEO of Mirai Kabushikigaisha and continue to do what we do at Culture Japan.

In this post I talk about what shoes I'm making and how I came to make them through my experience with working for my father. Those of you who read my ramblings regularly will notice some copy pasting from previous posts ^^;

9497817925_6dda955e6e_o

Many people know that my father is the shoe designer Jimmy Choo and because of this, many automatically think that I must be loaded with cash - but just because the people who are saying this would easily accept or ask their parents for cash, it does not mean everybody would.

It's unfortunate that there are so many folks in the world who use money as an excuse and blame others for the rut that they are in. Folks like this generally believe they do not have the ability to do achieve for themselves and that life can only be handed to them on a silver platter.

My parents gave me everything I needed to earn for myself - a pair of arms n legs and a reasonably healthy body - I do have asthma and spinal hernia but not complaining as thats nothing compared to illnesses that some others have to deal with.

The best thing that my dad has ever done for me was to let me achieve and earn on my own - he didn't want me to turn into a vegetable. You can read what happens to some people who accept to be silver spoon fed in the Why Money Doesn't Motivate Me post.

Anyway, if I wanted pocket money then I had to earn it and I did so initially by working for dad part time.

9500615726_bf2fc9e009_o

This is the Metropolitan buildings in Dalston Hackney. It's an old hospital where my dad rented out some space to build his business - it was here where I spent time working for dad who taught and mentored me.

9497818557_8e6b62a5f9_o

This photo snapped a couple of years ago when vising the UK.
While working for my dad, I learned everything about the shoe design and the manufacture process. I learned how to design, cut patterns, stitch and last Uppers too. Dad also gave me the opportunity to make shoes for his clientele including the late Lady Diana.

I also worked with fashion journals such as Elle and Vogue to get them samples for their model shoots and attended many of the fashion shows. While the work was interesting, I knew that this wasn't something that I wanted to do in life.

As I continued to learn more Japanese and discover more of the culture through anime, manga, games and spending time with my Japanese friends, I found a purpose in life at last which was to pursue my knowledge of Japan - I knew that I couldn't do that while working part time for my dad. As I was living with my mum, I didn't see my dad for a few years after I left his studio.

You can read more about what happened during this time, how I learned Japanese and how I made it to Japan in the How Discovering Japan Changed My Life post.

9500616334_6e20113b8d_o

Making shoes was interesting and the skills that I gained were applicable to producing accessories too such as bags, hip pouches and wallets.

But Japan was where my passion was and while I didn't have any contacts or leads to get to Japan, I knew I had to focus on studying Japanese.

9497819219_854bee4e27_o

Not working at my dad's studio anymore meant no more income at all which is generally a bad thing ^^;
I signed up to a talent agency called Richard Starnowski. Whenever Asian looking folks were needed, I would be given a call and have been in TV dramas, commercials and documentaries.

A memorable moment while on a shoot in the sticks for a documentary about fireworks for the Discovery Channel was when a bi-plane flew by the cast and camera crew at low speed and altitude. It was a clear blue evening and the sight sent a tingle down my spine. Was an inspiring sight that made me want to do something with this life.

I also started to work part time at a Japanese restaurant called Benihana. Not as one of the chefs who threw around knives which occasionally hospitalized customers but as one of the waiters who ran around the halls carrying dishes, washing dishes and occasionally breaking dishes ^^;

I chose Benihana for a few reasons. One of the reasons was so that I could speak Japanese with the many Japanese customers that Benihana had.
The other reason was so that I could save enough moolah for a ticket to go to the land of the rising sun. I wanted to travel to Japan and absorb as much of the culture as possible.

9497819577_1a41351cf2_o

I remember my first paycheck at Benihana - I worked a tough schedule only to see a couple of digits. But I knew not to expect too much at the beginning. It took a year to save enough cash for a ticket to Japan with some money leftover to spend. I would come back to the UK and continue to work at Benihana to save enough money for a trip the following year.

I eventually made it over to Japan by getting a Web Marketing position with the scientific journal called Nature. You can read in detail how I made it to Japan and also what my first years in Japan were like.

9497819933_c7d6ab058b_o

In the meantime, my father built his business to be a global brand and went on to be awarded an OBE by the Queen of England and the title of Datuk by the King of Malaysia.

9500617744_528b97befb_o

As for myself, I went on to build my career in the IT field and served positions such as Website Manager for Amazon and Product Manager at Microsoft.

9500618194_e4f31e4122_o

I then left Microsoft to startup a company called Mirai Kabushikigaisha (Mirai Inc) and now focus on sharing and making Japanese culture more accessible to the world through our Culture Japan label with the help of our mascot character Mirai Suenaga.

We currently have millions of viewers of our TV shows Culture Japan and Japan Mode and for the fiscal year of 2012 we managed to generate half a million USD in revenue and are set to double that very soon. You can read more about our business structure in this post.

9500618662_d74390b6a4_o

In 2013, the Japanese government appointed me as a member of their Creative Industries Internationalization Committee (CIIC) [経済産業省クリエイティブ産業国際展開懇談会] where I gather regularly at the ministry with the presidents from companies such as Bandai Namco Games, Sony Music Entertainment, Horipro, Kodansha, Isetan, Mitsui Fudousan, TBS etc to decide what measures should be taken to help the proliferation of Japanese content around the world.

9497821517_4c7b33465d_o

Very recently I ventured into robotics and created what is apparently the worlds first 3D printed interactive robot doll which I call Smart Doll modeled after our mascot character Mirai Suenaga.

9497821807_d52a15a6f7_o

Mirai Suenaga Smart Doll is completely modeled digitally and printed using modern 3D printing technologies.
The made-in-Japan robot doll is designed to be your everyday companion and will do things like tell you when you get Facebook, Twitter, mail, calendar notifications, teach you Japanese, be your car navigation, tell you when you need to buy milk by communicating with the Smart Refrigerators on the market and most importantly - make sure you are never ever ronery anymore.
You can see her moving below in our first motion test.

9497822123_6fc8a41451_o

Mirai Suenaga Smart Doll is planned for a 2014 release with the Standard Frame Version due out as early as the end of 2013.

Some folks ask whether Mirai is just a dolls head stuck onto a robot frame - nope! All the robotics fit inside Mirai's Outer Shell.

9497822403_dc0655f0fb_o

I introduced my dad to the world of Japanese anime dolls and he loves them! Naturally he was surprised that I would end up making some myself ^^;

I produce every component of my line of dolls - the outer shell (soft vinyl skin), frame, robotics, AI, makeup, wig, eyes, clothes and now shoes.
I still have my shoe making skills from the time I was working with dad and have applied those same processes to make shoes for dolls.

9497822685_20b164f2ef_o

Dolls care about their footwear too and don't want just simplified versions of what humans wear.

9497822969_b44ba28257_o

The result is rather cute ^^; Its still in prototype stage though which is why its rough around the edges.

9503531904_eb9e743675_o

My first design is a simple one that goes with Mirai's Summer School uniform.
The material for the Upper and soles are real leather and is built the same as a human sized shoe to withstand the strains of them being used to walk in.

While I initially didn't design the Smart Doll to walk, my human robotics engineer said to me "CHALLENGE ACCEPTED!" ^^;

9497823259_edab2a911e_o

While the first design is the Japanese school girl loafer, I will be rolling out various designs soon after. Mirai Suenaga Smart Doll is currently due to wear them at various fashion shows around the world.

9503532620_5ac19958ed_o

The first design will come with all units of Smart Doll and will also be sold separately too at events and online through our Culture Japan store due to launch this year.

9500620862_bf443f730f_o

The green foot shaped object is called a Last and is basically the mold used for making the shoe. This Last is hand-crafted but the mass production ones will be printed in 3D just like the molds for Mirai.

9497823887_681acc71ef_o

And here are what human sized Lasts look like. The metal plate at the bottom is there to flatten the nails which are hammered into it when Lasting the Upper (top soft part of the shoe) onto the bottom of the Insole.
The green circles expose the green plastic part of the Last and is where one would nail the Insole on to the bottom of the Last.

9497824173_fb3649ef87_o

While we are looking at human sized Lasts, I thought we'd take a look at my dads studio in London and talk about the various equipment used to make shoes.

9497824527_3330b1ae49_o

These are heels which come in various shapes and sizes. It has a metal pipe down the middle for reinforcement and is also becomes the hole where the Top Piece is punched in. The Top Piece is the term used for the heel tip.

9500622114_88be7e6d5b_o

These are Insoles - the base of the shoe. The Upper is attached to the Insole and sole attached to the bottom of it.

9500622388_4ca385e4cf_o

This machine attaches the heel to the Insole - it is loaded with a few large nails and once the heel and Insole is set, a lever is manually pulled down to force the nails into the Insole.

9500622676_7974681956_o

This machine helps attach the Stiffener to the back of the shoe. Inside the back of your shoe you will notice that its hard and thats because there is a Stiffener at the back to support the structure.

9500622986_a58f83a011_o

This is a Postbed machine and is used to stitch Uppers. The protruding stump makes it easy to stitch especially boots.

9500623306_308e29b5a3_o

My dad many moons ago when working on the building blocks of his business.

9500730157_f5370f006a_o

Here are some Backers ironed onto some material which will soon be the Upper.
A Backer is cut out from a roll and Ironed onto material or in some cases thin leather. The material is cut out leaving a margin around the shaped Backer where the process of Folding takes place.

Folding Tape is usually placed around the Backer where upon the margin of material is folded over the Folding Tape. What we have now is the Upper which is then glued onto some Lining which is then stitched to complete the Upper creation process.

9500623642_8ece9431d2_o

Another sewing machine used for the Uppers.

9500623910_95a15435f9_o

Heavy duty cotton used for the Uppers.

9500624180_386a5a9d28_o

This is a Scything Machine which is used to shave off the edges of leather pieces - this makes it possible to fold the edges of leather for stitching.

9500624404_6082439ea6_o

Various sheets of leather - mostly from Italy.

9500624696_4b5e990b21_o

About to make myself a wallet for use back home in Japan ^^;

9500624996_9ee91ee864_o

The design process of a shoe starts off by Mummifying a Last by taping it up with masking tape.

9497828117_ae0626e54a_o

Then a design is hand drawn onto the masking tape. Here I'm in the middle of working on a Black Rock Shooter themed shoe.

Once this is done, I would cut out the shapes and stick the tape onto card to make a pattern. This process is called Pattern Cutting.

9500625606_fe0e8f6da0_o

I wasn't too happy with my previous Black Rock Shoe-ter attempt so took time out to make a new one - here is the design.

9500625938_d4a5e59179_o

And here is the finished prototype. I tried to include the iconic features of Black Rock Shooter such as the white zip, star and flames.

9497828981_f9fa42bf01_o

The "flames" on the side turned out to be a bit iffy due to the lack of the material in the color that I wanted.
This was another rush job so if I was to improve it I would have the flames as translucent perspex material to better simulate the Black Rock Shooter blue flame.

9500626530_623b2150d2_o

I also wanted to have some chains on the shoe too - maybe for the next prototype.

9497829629_b5823203b2_o

Yes thats a working zip ^^;

9500627246_9b76b8f566_o

The plan was to originally start a brand of shoes (for humans) where I would focus on anime, manga and game themes licenses like Black Rock Shooter - and then Smart Doll happened ^^;

9500627784_4ef082f898_o

I may change my mind and continue with this line of human sized anime themed shoes in the future but for now its going to be shoes for dolls - dolls of 60cm in height to be specific. I can still make the Black Rock Shoe-ter in doll size though ^o^

9500732413_51623a429e_o

Now that you have seen how human shoes are made - my line of doll shoes are made exactly the same - the only difference is that we don't use nails for the doll shoes.

9500733067_9490e53cd3_o

To be honest I never thought I'd follow in my fathers footsteps to make shoes - but now that I have my own line of dolls - it only makes sense to build upon my experience of making shoes and produce my own line of shoes for dolls too.

9497830879_4e8b0eee97_o

This photo taken with my dad in Penang Malaysia where he was brought up. I also spent a bit of time growing up in Penang too and now we are back to attend Culture Japan Convention - its the first con that I'm doing together with penang Global Tourism which is in a couple of days ^^

If you don't have tickets yet then just turn up at 8:30AM at SQCC!

This image is a summary of what Mirai Suenaga Smart Doll does. A few folks mentioned the word "Magical" when describing Mirai and compared her to anime titles like Chobits, Hand Maid May, Angelic Layer and Ghost in the Shell.

At first I thought "Magical" sounded kinda cheesy but it kinda grew on me by the end of writing this post ^^;

This is the temporary CPU unit for Mirai right now used just for the motion tests.

9509867860_d6b197dc10_o

The CPU unit known as Mirai Core will be much more advanced and here is what its looking like so far. Everything will be distributed between 3 boards and will fit inside Mirai's detacheable head.

9507073057_b001f2dd41_o

And this is her on display at the previous Wonfes.

More progress on Project Mirai - the production line for my brand of shoes for dolls is nearly complete - read more about it here.

9509869092_c03d6d6cbe_o

Mirai's bikini is done and this is what she looks like in it ^o^
The part that took the most time was the oppai to make sure that the join between the oppai and the waist looked as natural as possible. Both had to be separate parts to enable more articulation and fit all the electronics inside.

This image is a summary of what Mirai Suenaga Smart Doll does. A few folks mentioned the word "Magical" when describing Mirai and compared her to anime titles like Chobits, Hand Maid May, Angelic Layer and Ghost in the Shell.

At first I thought "Magical" sounded kinda cheesy but it kinda grew on me by the end of writing this post ^^;

And now we take a look at Mirai out n about. This one taken at a ramen place in Samezu Tokyo.

As Mirai is controlled by Android, we want to enable owners to plug her into their car and use Google Navigate to find their way.
The Host Voice of Smart Doll will be Mirai but will also allow Guest Voices from other applications.

9507077371_ed3c70d1e4_o

At the moment Mirai has a tough time standing on her own - if there is a breeze then she would fall over (ouch).
Once all the servomotors are ready however, she would be able to balance herself - just like the way a Segway does.

9507077843_5bb55da3e0_o

And so Mirai Suenaga is born!

9509873270_e646dcf808_o

The journey begins.

9507078487_4ee553b924_o

Mirai exploring her surroundings. I think I've only mentioned the word "interactive" up until now but don't think I've emphasised that she will come with quite a bit of Artificial Intelligence - I want all Smart Dolls to be unique to their owner.

Smart Doll Outer Shell units. Assembly line migration complete. Commencing construction and data propagation.

9509874380_2d0ae9beba_o

Next we take a lookie at Mirai in the media. Mirai was featured on the Japanese TV show Ima Kono Kao Ga Sugoi which is presented by Sakurai Sho.
The producer couldn't tell the difference between "Amazon and Microsoft" and "Dolls and Figures."

9507079773_2e4bc66d9c_o

The show also talked about my line of work and wot not which you can read about here.

9507080043_b96de8db43_o

Mirai was also featured for a wee bit on the KTLA morning show in the US.

9507080295_f3e959b831_o

Currently planning to bring a few Smart Dolls to AX2014 for sale.

9507080753_b280e28848_o

And the rest of this post has screenshots of just some of the websites from around the world who have written about Mirai Suenaga Smart Doll - Russia, Spain, Taiwan, Japan and more.

Some of the articles may appear to be negative - but its actually just as Keikaku down to the small details like the images that I intended them to use ^o^

The kanji for Mirai in Japanese is [未来] which means "The Future."
Her name seems to be appropriate in many ways especially for the Smart Doll project.
The future is looking bright for this young lady - this "Magical Mirai" ^^;

Updated with photo from day 1! Thanks to all who popped by and and hope to see you on Day 2 ^o^

9565670607_5158ec083c_o

I still owe you Culture Japan Con coverage (few thousand photos to sort through ><) but needed to tell you today that Culture Japan will be having a 2 shell scheme booth at AniManGaki this weekend ^o^

During CJC, one of the organizers of AniManGaki approached me and asked if we would attend. Wasn't planning on attending and didn't think we would have enough time to put something together for another event so soon after CJC.

However, through the learnings of rolling out these booths for a while now, we got a workflow in place and have just managed to sort out our booth layout, logistics and manpower.

AniManGaki (AMG) is one of Malaysia's more popular ACG events which is packed with stage events, cosplay, doujin, anime and more - the next one will be held this weekend at Sunway Pyramid Convention Centre.

9568463580_77efdfee2e_o

This is the menu for Animangaki 2013!
Most of it is the same as CJC - but please forgive me as there is no Touch n Go - that was only for CJC attendees ><

9565671125_9b7f72bc11_o

As announced at CJC, as part of Project Mirai, we are planning to rollout a worldwide Culture Japan Membership System which will entitle you to various privileges.

I particularly want to thank those who came to Penang to support our first event and as I mentioned on stage, folks who have the Comrade Pass will be getting privileges from now on starting at AniManGaki.

All you need to do is to show your Comrade Pass (& Lanyard) and you will get 1 poster of your choice - no terms or conditions or bribes from me.
Posters are worth RM25 each and are A2 in size at 190gsm.

Folks who went to CJC and can't come to AniManGaki - don't worry as we got you covered - you will start to get privileges at other events - just do not loose that Comrade Pass and Lanyard!

I initially posted this saying that we were going to give away 2 posters but then realized that we don't have enough to go around - I want to make sure that as many people as possible get to have our lovely girls on their walls ^^;

Full details of the Culture Japan Membership System will be released at a later date.

9565671373_df91ddc155_o

Just hot off the printers is the new map of Penang featuring Mirai Suenaga and friends! This is a collaboration with Penang Global Tourism where my goal is to make maps more fun ^o^

This will be given out free at our booth desu!

9565671571_e4e557d92a_o

We will be selling Shirahane Nao-sensei's Mirai Doujinshi - its the first one ever ^o^

9568464554_7798c863db_o

The Mirai doujinshi contains illustrations that sensei has done for us so far.

9568464740_73e1f5b2cf_o

The latest work for us by sensei is this one of Kizuna Yumeno - Mirai's rival.

9568464986_abe38cd743_o

RM15 desu.

9568465152_3729457512_o

This illustration was only used on my Itasha so far.

9565672601_5409fc7c1f_o

9568465800_1840342fec_o

And here are the T-shirts.

9568466004_de01246520_o

This is the classic Tora T-shirt which is part of the Culture Japan Apparel line - its been around since the beginning and is always the first design to sell out.

9565673357_dbbfd84ddc_o

The next design is Mirai in her "Solar Marine" uniform.

9565673565_0432c92dfc_o

I love retro pixel games really like this design - we call it "Millennium Retro."

9565673807_b4ee32dbe7_o

This is the first Moekana T-shirt I made as a sample many moons ago and it finally gets the mass production treatment. This design is simply called "Kimono."

We have been improving the quality of the print over the past year and this is the best so far using a printing technology called Direct Print - we get full color gradients unlike previous Silk Screening versions. It's also durable in the wash too and doesn't crack like some of the initial batch did ToT

9568466914_1b4700b79e_o

T-shirts are all RM90 and come with 4 free cards - Moekana Onna (female), Otoko (male) and Chitose Shirasawa and Kizuna Yumeno cards - these complement the character cards that are included in the Moekanji pack.

9568467188_1e15e2bf9e_o

9565674689_40b08f69cd_o

9568467770_1bde378e4e_o

9565675099_2b18e2ab19_o

The size chart - just FYI - I always wear the S size cos I like em tight ^^;
Many T-shirts out there show the tips of Man Boobs which I'm not keen on so I chose a thicker material. Unless you are super excited, you need not worry about your tips showing when wearing Moekana T-shirts.

9565675303_755f2fe91c_o

Got or getting some Moekana or Moekanji Japanese learning cards? Then you need the cases to protect your preciousssssss.
Each case comes with free Moekana Paper, Scissors n Stone cards.

9568468452_25f34197a9_o

Want to learn Japanese the fun way? Then you need Moekana to learn hiragana and then Moekanji to learn kanji.

BUT! We only got stocks of Moekanji as Moekana is no more liao.
Moekanji is going for RM90 and empowers you with Japanese knowledge ^^

9565675793_defc081271_o

Culture Japan Con 2013 Summary

9572248969_0ef0c18d77_o

The first ever Culture Japan Con (CJC) took place on the 17th and 18th of August 2013 at Straits Quay Convention Centre Penang Malaysia which turned out to be much more successful than any of us had anticipated for a first event which was attended by 7500 comrades!

We sold tickets to 6000 comrades out of which 1500 were pre-orders for 2 day tickets - this gives us a total of about 7500 turnstile attendees over the 2 days.

The theme of CJC is "Comrade" and follows on the concept of Culture Japan Night (CJN) where attendees can enjoy activities and interact with guests in a relaxed environment.
Where possible, we created as many opportunities for fans to interact with our guests and it was great to see that many people mentioned that CJC had a homely feel to it. We even had a study area for folks to cram for their exams ^o^

For the guests, I thought it only made sense to invite my close comrades too who where voice actress Yuu Asakawa, illustrator Ikkyuu-sensei, illustrator Shirahane Nao-sensei (DMYO), cosplayer Maridah, cosplayer Angie and music band Vividblaze.

Many of the vendors were also comrades who I have been working with for a while and include Good Smile Company, Bushiroad, Kinokuniya, Little Akiba, Nozomi, VBG Network, AFA Shop, Comic Fiesta, Tomodashi T-shirts, Sakura Maiden Artworks and Infinity Sky. We also had a load of doujin booths too.

A quick thanks to sponsors B&W, Little Akiba and VBG. Also thanks to Air Asia, Holiday Inn, Holiday Tours, SQCC, Gamertakus, The Japan Foundation, the Japanese Embassy, WOW Japan, Aeon, Oh Sushi and all who made this event possible.

The following video by Media Partner WOW JAPAN gives you a taste of the event but focuses on Cosplay. More video coverage on YouTube too.

We had been taking notes running up to and after CJC for a post mortem that we recently had. I will be publishing all our bad judgement calls and learnings in a report for you too so that you can use those notes to put together your own events.

While CJC was announced back in June, we didn't really have time to work on CJC until after Anime Expo which left us with only 6 weeks to put CJC together meaning that all of us put in quadruple time to make the event happen - this photo taken after CJC shows us in the Left For Dead pose ><

There were so many unknowns as it was our first event and had no idea how many people were going to come. Many folks in Malaysia asked "Why Penang?" then folks outside of Malaysia asked "Why Malaysia?" and Martians asked "Why on Earth?"

I understand that KL being the capital of Malaysia would have most probably got us more attendees but what's more important than attendee numbers is that the everybody enjoyed themselves - we always focus on quality over quantity.

While its difficult to please absolutely everybody, CJC is organized by fans for fans and we know what its like to attend cons - where possible, we tried to make CJC a homely relaxed event and that is exactly the same feedback that we got from many of you.

Thanks again to all who came to support our first convention!

Will be posting more photos taken at CJC later which will focus on stage, the CJC official shop, booths, cosplay etc but for now am going to leave you with a wall of photos which were taken by photographers ARC Photography, Razrig, Yunamon, Jei and Fuminari - many staff members also helped take these photos too.

This post contains a poll, click here to view.

9575072606_41dd71992b_o

In order to improve CJC, I need your feedback on your CJC experience - in return, you stand a chance of winning the 11th CJC Touch n Go card which you can't buy as it was given out at stage events.
To stand a chance to get hold of the card all you have to do is to fill in the Google Docs form below with your feedback. If you win we will ask you to show proof that you attended CJC ^^;

To increase your chances of winning or if you can't be bothered to fill in the form, I'd love you to share photos or videos of your CJC experience on Twitter or Facebook or YouTube and use the tag CJC2013.
I will choose entries at random and contact you for your mailing address. Winners will be announced on my Twitter and Facebook as usual.
